*Remember to check the information you need to consider before registering for your IELTS exam below.

To book your test, you must:

1. Make sure you have your valid ID. The only valid documents* to take the IELTS test are:

  • for nationals: Original machine-readable or biometric passport, Citizenship Card, or Biometric Identification Card (for minors in Colombia)
  • for foreign nationals: Original machine-readable or biometric passport

*Under no circumstances will provisional identity cards (contraseña), alien identity cards (cédula de extranjería) or documents in process be accepted.

To ensure that your application is approved in our system, you must upload your identity document at the time of registration. Make sure you have a scanned copy in color of both sides of your identity document on hand at a maximum size of 1.3 MB. The file can be in JPEG, GIF or PNG format. The image must be less than 1600 x 1600 pixels. If you registered with your passport, you must upload the document as an open book, making sure that the image reflects the two pages: the one containing personal data and the next page.

On the day of the test, you must provide the same document that you used for registration, otherwise you cannot take the test and cannot apply for a refund.

Please note that the identity document must be properly uploaded before the test registration deadline, otherwise your test will be transferred to the next available session and there will be no refund.

We cannot process incomplete registrations, so be sure to upload only your accepted document.

If you have any problems uploading your identity document to our system according to the specifications described above, you can send it directly to servicioalcliente@britishcouncil.org.co.

2. Download and read  information for candidates regarding the test format, question types and results*.

*Please note that IELTS is not recommended for children under 16 years of age.

3. Pay for your test:

  • Computer-delivered IELTS or UKVI: through our online registration system with American Express, Diners Club, JCB, MasterCard or Visa credit cards.
  • Paper-based IELTS: through our online registration system with American Express, Diners Club, JCB, MasterCard or Visa credit cards (for tests in Ecuador, Panama and Colombia). Additionally, by bank transfer (PSE) or deposit in Davivienda (for tests in Colombia).

We need to receive confirmation of payment before the test registration deadline, or within the following time periods after your online registration: Computer-delivered IELTS: 24 hours. Paper-based IELTS or UKVI: 3 days. Please note that if you register within three days of the last day of registration, these time periods do not apply and we will require your payment immediately.

Once you have made the payment by bank transfer (PSE) or deposit in Davivienda, you must send us the corresponding proof of payment via email to servicioalcliente@britishcouncil.org.co.

Confirmation of the date of the IELTS test

After you register and once your payment is approved, you will receive:

  • An automatic email with access to our free online course: Road to IELTS!
